Marla Ahlgrimm: Healthy Breasts At Any Age

Marla Ahlgrimm

As we get older, we begin to wonder if our breasts are aging as well as the rest of us. It’s not unusual for a woman’s breast to change size or shape with age, says Marla Ahlgrimm. However, there are some telltale signs that something is amiss.

What do healthy breasts look like?

This answer varies from woman to woman, according to age and life stage. According to Marla Ahlgrimm, breasts may be large, small, or somewhere in between. They may be full and voluptuous or not. It is also very common for a woman’s breasts to be different sizes or for one to look “perkier” than the other. Menstruating women and those who are pregnant may also have swollen, fuller, and more tender breasts than any other time.

When to talk to your doctor

Marla Ahlgrimm says that although the range of normal is wide and varied, women who notice unusual swelling around their armpit, collarbone, or one or both breasts might want to talk to their doctor. Further, any unusual lumps or hard spots in previously soft tissue may be a concern. Marla Ahlgrimm also notes that, although rare, fluid or blood leakage from the nipples should be reported immediately.

How to care for breasts

Caring for your breast is much like caring for the rest of your body. Marla Ahlgrimm says to ensure they stay clean and dry. You can also use a moisturizing lotion if you have naturally dry skin. Other lifestyle factors, such as limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy BMI, and putting down cigarettes, will also help breasts stay healthy.

Breast cancer risk at 40

Around the age of 40, women’s health can change drastically. This is the age when. Menopause is not out of the realm of possibility. Pay attention to your breast now more than ever, and make sure that you are aware of any family history of breast cancer. Get a mammogram according to your doctor’s advised schedule, and be prepared for your cup size to go up.
