As women, we often like to dress up to give ourselves a little confidence boost. Marla Ahlgrimm says it is important to pay attention to how some aspects of our attire might affect our safety, health, and well-being, specifically high heels.
High heels are a stylish way to elevate any outfit, from jeans and sundresses to formal attire. However, comfort should never trump safety. Marla says that ill-fitting shoes, particularly high heels, can lead to long-term foot problems and potential injuries. Understanding the risks and learning how to choose and wear the right shoes can help you look and feel your best without compromise.
The Hazards of Poorly Fitting Shoes
Poorly fitting shoes are a major culprit behind many foot problems. Marla Ahlgrimm says if the shoe does not fit, do not wear it. Poorly fitted shoes, particularly those that are too tight, can force the foot into an unnatural position. This can lead to bunions, blisters, and more. Marla says that pointed-toe shoes are particularly problematic and can trigger a condition known as hammertoe.
Tight shoes can also lead to nerve damage, ingrown toenails, and blisters that feel like they never heal. Marla explains that the constant pressure and friction can inflame the skin and any underlying tissues, causing significant discomfort. Further, both too-tight and too-loose shoes can affect a woman's posture and gait and put undue stress on her knees, hips, and back. The higher the heel, the greater the potential for health complications.
Shoe Safety Tips
You can look good and feel good while maintaining your health and safety. Marla says the first step is to prioritize a proper fit. Shop for shoes at the end of the day when your feet are slightly swollen to get the most accurate fit. Look for shoes that give your toes enough room to wiggle a little and also provide adequate arch support.
A sensible heel height is also important. A two-inch lift is much safer and less wearing on the body than six-inch stilettos. A lower heel also reduces pressure on the ball of the foot to help maintain a more natural gait, says Marla.

Women's health encompasses many areas, says Marla. This includes foot health and making sure you are not sacrificing your body to fit into a beauty standard (in this case, height) that your body was never meant to fit into. Marla advocates wearing shoes and clothing that make you feel good and reminds us that what we wear can affect us in many ways outside of a social structure.
