Healthy Aging | Marla Ahlgrimm

According to Marla Ahlgrimm, healthy aging involves so much more than simply eating right and working out. Here, the retired pharmacist and women’s health industry entrepreneur offers advice on how to age with grace.

Watch your diet. Diet is certainly the most important part of a healthy daily routine, says Marla Ahlgrimm. Eating a diet full of whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, lays the foundation for your other healthy activities.

Take your medicine. Hopefully, you’re not required to take any daily medications. However, if your doctor has found it necessary to prescribe medicine, take it. Marla Ahlgrimm explains that doctors do not wantonly write prescriptions; if you do not understand why you have been given a certain medication, ask lots of questions. Do not stop taking any medication without approval from your healthcare provider.

Get screened. Marla Ahlgrimm knows that certain screenings, such as mammograms and colon cancer screenings, may be uncomfortable and terrifying. However, as you age, you are naturally more at-risk of certain conditions. And, if you remain sexually active, especially with multiple partners, you’re still at risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, regardless of whether or not you have completed menopause.

Get moving. When you eat the right foods, you give your body the fuel it needs to stay in motion. Marla Ahlgrimm explains that it is this physical activity that helps your body build strong bones and muscles. Exercising also helps pump oxygen throughout your body and brain, helping restore every aspect of your body and mind from a cellular level.

Do something for you. With age, it is easy to neglect doing the things we love. However, you should do something good for yourself each and every day. Whether you wake up and sip your coffee alone on your back porch or take a few extra minutes to perfect your makeup, do something just for you that makes you feel good.
